WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
PORTUGAL 2022
The 2022 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships will take part together with the Nelo Summer Challenge, an event renowned as the best ocean surfski race, being held every year for the surfski and the outrigger canoe paddlers.
The main race is the 19.5km long downwind course which connects Viana do Castelo to Ofir’s beach in Esposende, Portugal.
ABOUT THE RACE
It will be an open downwind race of 19.5Km, connecting Viana do Castelo to Ofir’s beach in Esposende.
The event will take place in Ofir, Esposende, Portugal, between 6 and 8 of October 2022.

The Course
The course will be 19.5km of downwind, with no upwind section, start and finish in the surf.
When and Where
The defined days will be the waiting period and the race will take place in the day with the best downwind conditions.
The start will take place in Viana do Castelo, right across the city’s center, and finish at Ofir’s beach, right in front of Axis hotel.

All paddlers are automatically registered in the Open class.

LIFESAVER TOURNAMENT

The FINAL TOURNAMENT
A 600 meter event, raced in spec skis, with start and finish on the beach.
This will be a mono class event and take place in the day not chosen for the downwind, between saturday and sunday.
So, if the best downwind conditions are set for saturday, then the downwind race will be saturday and the lifesaver tournament on sunday.
BOAT DETAILS
Each participant will be given a boat with a specific color for each race.
Course Details
The start line will be in the beach, you will have to run to your boat, paddle 300 m to the turn out in the ocean come back to the beach and run to the finish line on the sand.

The event will take place in Esposende and Viana Do Castelo
ESPOSENDE
Esposende is a strip of the Portuguese coastline, situated between Vigo and Porto and, has to offer extensive sand dunes, pine forests and woodlands, hills and cliffs, rivers and sea, all framed in a dynamic equilibrium that allow us to say: “Esposende, a privilege of nature”.
The Ofir Beach is located in the town of Fão. Extensive beach, is framed within the North Coast Natural Park. It has easy access and, from the Ofir pine forest has access walkways.
VIANA DO CASTELO
Viana do Castelo is the Atlantic city further north of Portugal.
The presence of the river, the mountain and the sea, rendered the city the qualities of excellence that delight the senses and, are conducive to a healthy and pleasant leisure time.
The unparalleled richness of Vianesa ethnography, originality and functionality of its crafts and, the cultural activities are other attributes that make Viana do Castelo an extremely attractive city for all aspects of tourism.

The official Hotel for the event is Axis Ofir Beach Resort Hotel, a 4 star hotel situated in Ofir Beach, next to the river Cávado, one of the most beautiful tourist regions of Portugal.
Axis Ofir Beach Resort Hotel will be the event’s headquarter. It’s a family friendly Hotel, ideally located directly on a long sandy beach, with a protected landscape surrounding the mouth of the river Cávado. The Hotel rooms are equipped with a complete bathroom, air conditioning, satellite TV, direct dial phone, minibar and balcony.
